Announcements:
Welcome Mr. Parham!
We are proud to announce that Mr. Andrew Parham has joined the South-Doyle Band Family as Assistant Director of Bands. He will be working with both our middle school and high school students, and is sure to be a great asset to our program.
4.5 Weeks Check Off Test
The 4.5 WEEKS CHECK OFF TEST must be completed on/before September 5, 2008 @ 3:30 pm. No make ups allowed after this date.
Cookie Dough Sale
Cookie dough is expected to arrive on Tuesday, September 9. The packages will be distributed after band rehearsal or at the Booster Association Meeting.
The dough must be refrigerated, and there is no refrigerator space at the high school. Therefore, it must be picked on September 9.
For each item not sold under the minimum required, the cost is $6 (the average profit) per item. Students were required to sell 7 items. (For families with multiple students in band, each student was to sell 4 items.)
Football Game
The second football game is Friday, Sept. 5 at home. The opponent is West H S. Band students are to be in their seats in the band room at 6 pm and be dressed in khaki shorts and band shirt.
Knox County School Coupon Books
The band sells Knox County School Coupon Books each Fall. The proceeds go in the SDHS account for the band. Each student is required to sell a minimum of 2 books. The sales start on September 17 and conclude on October 3. This is not a Booster Association event; therefore, individual student accounts receive none of the proceeds.
After School Rehearsals
After school marching rehearsals are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays (check the calendar) at 4:00 PM. The rehearsals end at 6:00 pm.
Student Sign Ups
Students are reminded to sign up for Jazz Ensemble, Jr. Clinic (9th grade) and Sr. Clinic in the band room
Past Due Band Fees
Several students have not yet paid their band fees, which are used for transportation to and from football games and competitions, for instrument repair and replacement, and for supplemental instructional staff. Checks should be made payable to the South Doyle Band Booster Association and may be mailed to Larry Butler, 3100 Maloney Rd, 37920.
If you have questions about what you owe or desire to work out a payment plan, contact Larry Butler: larrybutler@regalfuels.com
Ad Sales for Smoky
One of the first things you notice about the program schedules at other band competitions throughout the area is how full of advertisements they are. Our Smoky program needs to be FULL of ads in order to pay for itself and hopefully show a profit. We need everyone to sell as many ads as possible. Ask your hairdresser, your dentist, your banker, real estate agent, mechanic, florist and anyone else you do business with! The forms are available online HERE and in the Band Office. With everyone's help, this year's program can be the most successful ever.
Competition Dates Announced
Our competition dates are:
September 27th - Land of the Sky Marching Band Festival in Enka North Carolina:
http://www.enkaband.com/
and, October
11th - Volunteer Classic Marching Competition at Heritage High School.
Booster Meeting
The next Booster Association meeting will be held at 7:00 pm September 9 in the band room. We will discuss Spring Trip, Budget Items, 2008 Smoky Mountain Marching Competition, and more!
Pancake Breakfast
Money and unsold tickets are to be returned on Sept 4. Students are required to sell 5 tickets which cost $5 each. The entire ticket price goes to the band. (For families with multiple students in band, each student must sell 3 tickets.) Recall, once a student sells the minimum amount, the profit on sales above the minimum goes to the student’s band account. The breakfast will be at Applebee’s (Alcoa Highway) on Saturday morning September 6, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. Students and parents who volunteer to serve and bus tables should arrive at 6:30 am. If you have questions contact Suzanne Binkley.
Attention Senior Parents
Gina Rauhuff is preparing senior scrap books. If you have photos, award certificates or other items you'd like to have included, contact her at troopmom352@comcast.net.
Student Accounts
Balances in student accounts will be posted on the web site by student ID number. Student ID numbers may be found on the student’s schedule, on last year’s report card, or on Knox County School’s “Parent Portal” website.
Spring Trip
Proposed itineraries for four spring trip destinations were passed out at the August Booster meeting. The destinations are: Chicago, Washington, DC, Williamsburg, VA, and Orlando FL. So that there are enough students to perform at the destination, 80% of the band must indicate they intend to go.
Fee In Lieu of Fundraising
The funding for band activities is based on an up front fee plus fund raising throughout the school year. Minimum goals are established for each fund raiser so as to fund the budget. However, families may opt out of all fundraising by paying a fee equivalent to the total of the profit each student is required to raise. This year’s opt out fee is $300. If you pay the opt-out fee and still participate in one or all fund raisers, 100% of the profit from any items you sell will go into your student account since your minimums will have already been met.

A Letter From Jon Humber
Parents,
I’m sure you have heard by now that I have moved on to another job. I would like to take a moment to express to you and your children my gratitude for the work, help, advice, and support you have all given me over the last four years. I have learned so much about what it takes to survive and succeed in this profession from you, your children, and Mr.
Satterfield.
In case the full story has not been passed to you, I want you to know that I was not originally looking to move on; I had not applied for a transfer, nor had I applied to another system. I was looking forward to the promise of this year and the excitement of a great show concept and quality concert band, just as I’m sure you were. I was called last Wednesday and asked if I would take this position, and honestly I was quite nervous at the prospect, but after much thought and prayer, I decided to say yes.
Professionally, this is the most ideal situation that I could possibly imagine. I believe I can contribute much of the expertise I learned from the Cherokee band and apply it to the Gibbs situation, and that it will lead to a very positive outcome. The timing, however, I could not regret more. It is never ideal to move a teacher after the school year starts, for either the students or the teacher; so I know this was hard on your children. Please understand, from this aspect, it was hard on me too.
I will certainly miss your children; four years is a long time to spend without developing an attachment to the people around me, not to mention the appreciation I have for Mr. Satterfield. He did, after all, basically get me my first “real” job (as a Wesley Woods staffer might say). As I have said, I have learned much from your children, and I hope that I contributed something to their lives and education as well. I appreciate all who have wished me well, and I will continue to watch for the growth of your band for years to come.
And, of course, I’ll see you all at Smoky.
Best wishes in all you do
Jon
